Wearing Hijabs in the Summer
When it's freezing cold or sweltering hot outside, staying comfortable in your hijab can seem impossible, but with a little common sense and the right clothing, it's pretty simple! Here are our top tips for staying comfortable all year round:
Summer Hijab Tips
- Choose light colours. Remember that dark colours absorb more heat, so paler colours should keep you cooler. If you have to wear a black outer-garment, try to keep it as lightweight as possible or choose a paler headscarf.
- Loose, simple clothing. Bulky layers of fabric will trap heat and feel more cumbersome in hot weather. Look for opaque fabrics - this way you can wear fewer layers and still stay covered.
- Breathable fabrics, remember that natural fabrics are breathable and will keep you much cooler. Look for cotton blends and stay away from polyester or you'll bake!
- Stay cool! It might seem obvious, but try to make things easier by drinking lots of water, carrying a fan and staying out of the sun. Always make sure that you are comfortable before you leave the house, so once you leave you can just get on with your day.
- Covering up in summer can be a good thing! Headscarves actually protect your head, face and neck from UV rays and much of the summer heat - it's not that different to wearing a sun hat if you think about it!
