Coverage & Size of the Hijab

Think about how much of your body you expect your hijab to cover. Does it just need to cover your head and neck, or do you need something to cover your chest as well. For complete coverage, rectangular hijabs should be at least 45cm x 120cm (18" x 48") and square hijabs are usually sold in the sizes 100cm x 100cm (40" x 40"), 125cm x 125cm (50" x 50") and 150cm x 150cm (60" x 60").

Hijab Fabric

For everyday hijabs, cotton or polyester are probably the best choices. Cotton is light and breathable, so it is perfect for summer and hot climates. You will also find cotton blends, silk, chiffon and poly blends. If you are buying chiffon, be aware that it is not opaque, so you will need an underscarf to completely cover your hair. This creates a soft look with can be very pretty.

The fabric also affects on whether the hijab will stay on your head. Slippery fabrics like polyester will need a cotton or lace underscarf to stop them slipping, and if you have very straight hair, the hijab may start to slip after a long day. Be aware of this when buying and choose an underscarf, pins or a different style of hijab if necessary.

• Measurements - exactly how large and what shape is the hijab you are buying. A good online store should give you the exact measurements of your hijab, so you can work out just how it will fit and cover you.
• Fabric - make sure you know just what your hijab is made out of. A good store will tell you exactly what type of fabric it is - if they do not, you are taking a complete chance on the quality of your hijab.
• Returns Policy - always read the returns policy of your online store before buying. Obviously you should expect to be happy with your purchase, but it is important to double check the store's policy, especially when buying internationally.
• Product Images - because you cannot see the hijab for yourself, you are reliant on the images that the online store gives you of the hijab. Make sure that you are happy with what you see before you buy.
